Algonquin Park

In 1999, the Kingscote Lake access point at the extreme southern tip of Algonquin received a "face-lift" to the road, parking, and washroom facilities. Significant changes were made with the able assistance of the Algonquin Forestry Authority. The existing road was widened and re-surfaced with gravel, a parking lot was constructed at the access point, and vault toilets added. The existing cottage-camp at the access point was purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) on behalf of Ontario Parks under the Legacy 2000 project. The NCC raised matching funds to acquire the land and all buildings were then removed. The site has been converted to a small cluster of six campsites and Interior regulations apply. NOTE: Trailers and other recreational vehicles are not permitted.

On Kingscote Lake, canoe campsites were added as well as additional campsites on Scorch and Branch Lakes. There are now a total of 23 Interior canoe campsites accessible from the access point.

The existing day-use trail at High Falls is now serviced with parking for 20 vehicles and vault toilets. The trail head is located about 10 km from the Kingscote Lake access point. A short mountain bike trail of 6.5 km (13 km round trip) and moderate degree of difficulty can also be accessed from the High Falls parking lot. Once on the mountain bike trail, there is an interesting 150-metre side trail that provides access to Gut Rapids which is a narrow scenic canyon on the York River.

With thanks to the Friends of Algonquin Park.
